Private Health Fund Rebates
Many private health funds offer limited cover for psychological treatment, based on the level of your cover. Private health funds do not currently offer cover for treatment provided by a social worker. Please consult your particular fund to find out the level of support for which you may be eligible. If seen privately, it is not necessary to have a referral to a Clinical Psychologist or Social Worker.
Medicare
If you are referred by a GP under a Mental Health Plan, or by a Psychiatrist or Paediatrician, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate under the Better Access scheme. Your doctor will need to assess your eligibility and generate a Mental Health Care Plan before you can claim rebates from Medicare. Please be aware that your doctor needs extra time to do this; it is important to let the receptionist know you are coming in for a GP Mental Health Care Plan, so an appropriate appointment can be booked. You will need to bring both the Mental Health Treatment Plan and the referral letter to your first appointment.
You may also be eligible for an Eating Disorder Management Plan. Please discuss your eligibility with your GP. As above, if referred under an EDMP, you will need to bring both the letter of referral and the EDMP to your first session. Information about eligibility for an Eating Disorder Management Plan is also available here: NEDC
Please note that those referred under Medicare will be eligible for rebates for Telehealth sessions. Private health funds will also provide rebates for Telehealth. Please see your provider for more information.
Please see the Medicare Fact Sheet for a list of clinically diagnosable disorders and further information on being seen under the Medicare Benefits Scheme.
